last week with the city to set up their campaign committees.
...Zermeño, 50, who vied from the council in 1998, was
appointed to the Planning Commission, considered the most influential
and powerful of the seven boards that advise the council, as well
as a stepping stone to the council.
He's running, he said, simply "to make sure the excitement
in Hayward doesn't die down."
"Hayward is going places. I want to be an integral part part,"
he said.
Zermeño added that he offered a breath of experience, as
the owner of a video store, a longtime Chabot College educator
and a participant in community organizations.
"Protect, improve and preserve our neighborhoods" is

Zermeño to hold City Council campaign kickoff
HAYWARD - Planning Commissioner Francisco Zermeño is holding a kickoff event for his Hayward City Council campaign from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
So far, Zermeño and two others have announced they will challenge incumbents in the March 2004 race.
Terms expire next year for four of the seven council members: Olden Henson, Joe Hilson, Doris Rodriquez and Bill Ward.
Zermeño's event, including appetizers and a no-host wine bar, will take place at the Hampton Inn, 24137 Mission Blvd. A $25 donations is asked of guests.

Zermeño to host campaign reception
Francisco Zermeño will host a campagin recpetion for4 his March 2004 City Council race from 6 yto 8 p.m. July 2 at Los Dos Hermanos Restaurant, 28257 Mission Blvd., Hayward. A $25 donation is requested.
Zermeño, a Planning Commission member, Chabot College instructor and video store owner, is one of a handful of declared challengers in the race for four council seats. Terms expire next year for council members Olden Henson, Joe Hilson, Doris Rodriquez and Bill Ward.
Rodriquez has said she doen't intend to run, but the others reportedly will be incumbents in the race.

HAYWARD - And they're off. Challengers in the March 2004 City Council race already have left the gate and raised thousands of dollars in campaign funds, according to financial statements.
Challengers Barbara Holliday and Francisco Zermeño both raised about $3,700. They've since held campaign events and raised quite a bit more, they said. Hollidy spent $1,473 and Zermeño spent $3,234 during the filing period. Both are members of the Planning Commission.
Zermeño's notable contributors include Hayward School Board members Frank García and Paul Frumkin III, and school board candidate Sara Gonzales.
Zermeño has been trying to build some campaign momentum through campaign events and participation at street parties and community festivals, he said.

Reconsider recall, local activists say. Group sees waste, challange to democracy.
HAYWARD - Local politicos have found a productive way to deal with their frustration about the recall: the anti-recall campaign.
About 20 politicians and activists in local labor and Democratic organizations attended Wednesday night's grand opening of the Eden Alameda County Against the Recall campaign headquarters, located at the United Food and Commercial Workers Hall, 28870 Missin Blvd..
Participants, many of whom spent time calling voters, said they were struck not only by the feedback in strong opposition to the recall, but by the energy surrounding the effort.
